What is Concrete Stencilling?

  • How does concrete stencilling work? Here new designs and patterns are laid into fresh concrete or on old installations. It is basically a way to make driveways, garden edging and car ports look better and more appealing. It can be a tricky process so hiring a professional to get the job done is advisable. If you are adventurous you can try doing it yourself!

If you are curious about the process, let’s break it down to you as simply as we can.

The first step involves placing of the stencil. When the concrete is new (which means wet) that’s when the stencil is placed. The job requires two people, one who will hold the stencil and the other who will roll it out and hold it at the other end. Once the placement is correct a stencil roller is used to plaster the stencil to the concrete firmly.

Next the stencils are taken up one by one. The most important thing about concrete stencilling is uniformity in design and pattern. For this the die cut strips are placed in a definitive manner helping with alignment. Once the slab is covered the stencil needs to be trimmed from the inside. The edges are stuck down with a bull float.

According to the client’s preference the colour is added to the stencil. Colour hardener is evenly spread all along the surface and made to merge with the slab. The colour application is done immediately after the stencil application to ensure there is enough moisture that the colour hardener can absorb.

It’s now time for the texture. A release agent in liquid or powder form is applied on the concrete. This helps to harden the slab and when the slab is strong enough a roller is rolled over the slab. The rollers have different designs and create pre chosen effects on the slab. You can opt for one that looks like stones or even bricks.

After the texturing is done the stencil is removed in reverse order and then disposed. The next day the releasing agent is washed off and swept away the day after. For finishing touches concrete sealer is applied and the process is completed. Concrete stencilling is also great for the pool area and pavements.
