How to Preserve Your Herbs for Future Use
You’ll notice that when you have a surplus of your herbs, it’s hard to preserve them for future use because you don’t know what to do with them.
Well, don’t panic, to avoid your herbs just go to waste, you can easily preserve them by simply following these simple steps…
1) Cut the stalk about six inches where the tender leaves are located. Do this procedure in the morning to preserve the leaves with their essential oils. Clean the leaves and remove some older leaves and tough ones.
2) Clean the leaves from dirt. Don’t soak the stems or leaves in water, since dampness will cause mould to form within the leave areas.
3) Tie the stalks into 6-8 bunches and put them inside a small paper bag. Secure with an elastic band or string around the top of the bag. Hang them in shade but open area with circulating air for air drying. Don’t let them expose to direct sunlight to preserve their natural nutrients.
4) It will take a couple of weeks to totally dry the leaves. They’re ready for storage or use when the leaves easily crumbles. Pass the crumbled leaves through a sieve to remove some large ones and separate the fine ones.
5) Store you fine ones in small, air tight bottle dark glass containers to preserve their color. Make sure to put labels to your containers for easy identification.
6) Store them in a cupboard or away from the stove because heat and sunlight would affect the herb colors and their tastes.
7) Check your stored herbs carefully for any moisture leaks or mould. They should be dried properly to avoid damage of their taste and flavor.
The freshness of your herbs would depend on the proper storage facilities you would apply. It’s very important to execute an excellent preservation techniques to make your herbs in their freshness condition for a longer period.
