Four Tips For Starting Your First Garden

There are a few gardening tips that have worked for me in the past that I am going to share with you because when starting your own garden there is no reason to head in with your eyes closed. Looking for gardening tips? Try the internet, gardening clubs, books, magazines and do not forget to talk to your local nursery.

To get started there is a wide range of information you would like to know. Amongst them, the most important are: how much of sun can you expect the plot to get? What type of fertilizers should you use? What about mulch and the kind of soil that the plot has? You would also want to know the types of tools you need along with the kind of tiller and watering system that are required.

Tip 1 There is nothing as great as writing down the entire gardening plan on a piece of paper. It also helps you save time. To help you get going, brainstorm with a friend with the plan in front of you. Points of consideration: its appearance; the distance between the garden and the hose and sprinklers, if any. Of course any thing that comes to mind.

Tip 2 The garden is a success if the soil is prepared well. One of the important points of consideration is that all plants may not grow well in the same kind of soil. Their needs vary. For growing vegetables or herbal plants, use organic fertilizers as they would not affect the natural flavor of the food. Wooden chip mulch or any good compost would be a better choice than ordinary fertilizer.

If you think that having a compost heap at your backyard is a near-impossible idea, think again. Its valuable returns are incredible. While fresh home brew compost is full of nutrients for the herb and vegetable garden, sometimes it proves to be slightly unrealistic.

Though mulch is a good substitute to home compost, you have to be sure that they are either pine or redwood, as it breaks faster since they are softer woods. Irrespective of what you use, mulch, compost or fertilizer, these must be mixed well to get good results.

Tip 3 You might like to make last minute changes to the appearance of your garden. to be able to do this, do not plant the plants soon after the soil is ready. Just lay them out ion top of the soil and check whether you like what you see. Plants having similar characteristics should ideally be clubbed together. At least that is what I feel. For instance, plants with larger radii should be clubbed together. You can see all the plants if you plant taller plants at the back with shorter ones in the front.

Tip 4 Remember to water your garden. this is critical. Keeping up with it can be a big job depending on how big your house is. To make a garden grow on its own, use an automatic watering system. Ranging from a big sprinkler system to a timer on a hose sprinkler, these automatic systems can provide the solution. Gardening can be an engaging and rewarding pastime which gives you pleasure, beauty and of course, food also!
